The DBL FratHouse CyberCafe: A place for gamers & fraternity members to gather.

Written by Bruce Smalls|August 28, 2009

The Frathouse CyberCafe is more than a physical and virtual gathering spot for gamers and fraternity members. The Frathouse is more than just four walls, brick, and wood. The Frathouse strives to be a beacon of hope not only in our community in Spartanburg SC but in every community where there are depritech youth. Depritech is term used to describe an individual deprived or has limited access to technology. If the Frathouse has been labeled as the "house that gaming built' then we should also acknowledge the the "spirit of activism" is the power it runs on!

The actual physical location of the Frathouse is the host to most of the events facilitated by Delta Beta Lambda Fraternity Inc. These events range from basic socializing to some of the most competitive gaming tournaments witnessed. However the most important activity held at the Frathouse is its daily after school program.

Whoever would have guessed that the same computers used for competitive gaming would also be used to cultivate the minds of our greatest resource, our children. Every computer in the Frathouse has been uploaded with the latest educational software. Frathouse staff provides both group and one on on tutoring, tailoring study sessions to the needs of the individual child. The Frathouse and its staff are determined to make a stand in bridging the technological divide and personify the message of no child left behind.

You are cordially invited to the Frathouse. When you enter I challenge you to take mental pictures of the sights, close your eyes, and process the sounds. Can you hear and feel the spirits of children safe at play? Can you feel the competitive drive of the human spirit? Can you feel the warmth, a quickening in your soul? You do don't you? Well friend that's the Frathouse's way of saying welcome home.

Rooms of the DBL Frathouse CyberCafe: The House Gaming Built

ROOMS OF THE DBL FRATHOUSE:

SHELLSHOCK:

Noise, fury, drive, and the competitiveness of the human spirit! This is what the Shellshock Room truly represents! Sure when you enter the Shellshock Room you see the four 32in mounted LG televisions and (2) top of the line dell computers. Sure you see the 4 Xbox stations and the plush theatre chairs. However there is the intangible. There is the spirit of competition. Once the volume is turned up and the adrenaline is pumping there is no denying what the Shellshock Room was made for. It was made for battle! It was made for clan matches! It was made for the hardcore gamer in us all! To all comers enter the Shellshock Room if you dare, but know that it is not for the weak of heart. However it is an ever present reminder that to the victor goes the spoils of victory!

QDECK:

The QDECK is the first room you see upon entering the Frathouse and it sets the tone for the rest of the house. The QDECK plays hosts to (2) 32in LG flat screen televisions, (4) high powered gaming computers with Acer monitors and Logitech G15 keyboards, Nintendo Wii, (2) Rockband stations and (3) xbox 360 consoles. As you can see this room takes the interactive gaming experience to the next level! Casual and competitive gamers alike are often observed in the QDECK playing any combination of sports on the Wii. However bowling and boxing on the wii have become house favorites! Or maybe you want to jump in our Rockband station and live out your inner rock star. Whatever you choose we’re sure the QDECK will get your heart racing and bring out the gamer inside of you!

DBLLABS:

Few people understand or appreciate the power that resides in a computer. From workstation to desktop entertainment center within a few mouse clicks is no small feat. Little imagination is needed then to place the powerhouse of DBLFrathouse squarely in the computer labs.

Five Gaming PCs make up the back- bone of our industries design, implementation and marketing strategy. It is no problem for our computers to handle both the rigors of work, while providing education or even a competitive atmosphere in the Gzone. Each machine holds a Quadcore processor, 4Gigs of DDR2Ram and an Evga Geforce GTX 260! All our computers have 750 Gigabyte Hard Drive storage. This translates into huge media software libraries for anything we may need. The Webcams are an integral part of our internet interaction and allows us further interaction quickly. The internet speed of DBLLabs alone is a full 40 GB per second of download speed. This has given us a distinct advantage in the realms of media streaming and download time. Zero Lag, zero waiting and zero troubles are how we operate. From education to full software reviews, there is nothing out of our realm of influence.

PILL BOX:

Every great organization has a command center and the Frathouse is no exception. The Pill Box acts as the brain center. From this room administration policy and decisions are issued and carried out. The Pill Box includes (2) high powered gaming computers with Acer monitors & Logitech G15 keyboards, (1) Dell computers system, (1) Dell front load printer, surround sound, (1) 32in LG television, and (2) xbox consoles. The Pill Box also serves as the main stage for the GZONE LIVE broadcast. In a few seconds the Pill Box can transform from a routine office into an omline production!

FOUNDERS'S CLUB:

If the command center of the facility is ever infiltrated there needs to be a remote location to facilitate standard operating procedures. Well guess what, the FOUNDER'S CLUB plays that role for the Frathouse. Remember good things come in small packages. So don't be fooled by the size of the FOUNDER'S CLUB. This room comes fully equip with (2) Dell Computers, (1) xbox console, (2) theatre style chairs, (1) 32in LG flat screen television, and (2) Acer monitors. The room also gives one the ability to manage and produce a live event with ease and efficiency.

Building clan loyalty and structure: Family First

Written by Bruce Smalls| August 23, 2009

When on xbox live or when I'm just just out and about gamers often ask my advice on building a clan and retaining membership. Just by listening I determine their only purpose in forming a clan is just to push their personal agendas. I guess gaming clans are susceptible to greed, envy and self righteousness like every other business or organization. In my opinion clans disband for three main reasons. (1). Lack of organizational structure

(2). Lack clear purpose or mission

(3). LACK OF THE "FAMILY FIRST MENTALITY"

In life you always finish how you start and building a business or clan is no different. When building a clan the first thing you must establish is the reason why. Why do I want to lead/form clan? What are our goals? How will the clan benefit its members? These questions help to lay the foundation. Answering these simple yet important questions will help to provide you with clarity and a true landmark to come back to whenever you feel yourself or the clan getting off task.Answering these questions will also help you to place the correct individuals in positions of authority based on how they fit within the overall mission of the clan.

Organizational structure is so very vital! The people that are selected to be in positions of authority must be reflective of you and the clan mission. When selecting leadership many clans go for the best shooters or the individual with the most achievement points in a particular game. That's all fine and dandy but an individual's accomplishments as a gamer doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a great leader. Leaders must always keep an object view , enforce clan structure, get member feedback, and personify clan mission!

The most important thing in building clan structure and loyalty is letting your members know that it is always FAMILY FIRST! So many clan leaders say that they do everything for the clan, but how true is that. Making a commitment to FAMILY is a sacrifice. Many cases it means that personally you may take a lost to ensure the prosperity of the group. As a leader it your job to serve the members of your community. Don't be afraid if certain members are stronger than you in certain areas. You must learn how to pinpoint your member's strengths and place them in the best position possible for the good of the group. Gamers are just like everyone else in the sense that they want to belong. They want to be a part of a family. In the mind of gamers, if your clan name can become synonomous with family you have won! From time to time the clan will have problems but what family doesn't. By keeping it FAMILY FIRST your member will be connect by more than a game but rather a life long bond of brotherhood and friendship!

Isaac's Friends brightens days for many children who are hospitalized

Even as a visitor, the trip to a hospital can be an ominous, intimidating place for a youngster. With the help of lots of friends, Jamie Hughes is trying to change that.

Hughes, an Upstate native and father of two who has spent most of his 39 years in the information technology field, is the founder of Isaac's Friends, a nonprofit organization that attempts to bring joy to hospitalized children and their siblings.

“Wherever there are children in hospitals, we want to be there to help,” says Hughes, whose organization recruits and trains volunteers to go into hospitals to provide emotional support by playing video games or sharing arts and crafts. The group served 48 children in July and figures to serve about 60 this month.

“I thoroughly enjoy it, even though it can sometimes involve heartbreak,” says Hughes. “It helps the families who are in crisis; it's a help to them just to know that people care about them.”

Hughes says his volunteers are trained not to inquire about any illness – although that information is often volunteered by parents – but instead to focus on activities that can reduce the fear and anxiety of the moment.

“The goal is to take the child's mind off the circumstances,” Hughes says. “Once we spend some time with a family, the parent will tell us the severity of the illness. We try to train our volunteers to be good listeners and do what we can to support the parent. Sometimes that might mean holding a baby and rocking it.”

Hughes started the organization last year and drew the name from his 7-year-old son, Isaac.

“We want our volunteers to simply be friends. And that's the way Isaac is; he's a natural at being friends to other kids. The name had a nice sound to it.”

Hughes, a Gardner-Webb University graduate who enjoys video games himself, manages a program that keeps volunteers busy at the Greenville Children's Hospital, a Charlotte hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. He plans to expand to more hospitals locally in the near future and eventually to hospitals around the country.
